So a few days back I posted about how AT&T makes !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! seemingly as difficult as buying a house. Well, today and I went to get my pre-ordered iPhone.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I eagerly walked into the store to buy my new iPhone, which just arrived five days late . Before I went about purchasing, I wanted to speak to the manager to tell him about this fiasco, and potentially get some sort of something for my trouble (along with me threatening to switch to Verizon).

I talked to him, and he wasn't any bit apologetic or sympathetic. Because of such, I didn't want to buy my phone from him, so I demanded a return. He did it, stating that the customer service rep lied to me about a restocking fee (refer to Part 1). It took about 20 minutes to do the return. I asked him if I could immediately purchase the phone elsewhere after this is return is completed - he said yes.

I then drove to Best Buy to get the phone. It was the closest place to get the iPhone and I figured it would be easier than working with AT&T again. Best Buy was great - but I wasn't able to get a phone because the return I made 25 minutes earlier hadn't yet processed.

Then, I went back to AT&T, and they said they made a mistake on the return and redid it (no apologies...again).

However, this time they told me I can't purchase any phone until my monthly bill has cleared. They have the payment - AT&T hasn't processed it yet. They told me to wait another 48 hours .

Worn out at this point, I figure I'll wait two days and go back to Best Buy.

So I drive home, only to realize that in the process of doing the return, AT&T SHUT OFF MY DATA. I can still call and text, but no data. I could have called to fix it, but I'd rather not deal with AT&T Phone Customer Service, and mostly to piss off the AT&T Store.

I go back to the AT&T Store (for the third time), and they fix what they accidentally did with my data (no apologies...again).

I still don't have an iPhone.

This time, here's a purple S4 Avant with an RS4 body kit. Does Oppo like purple wagons?

I do believe I am Oppo's most eminent purple car enthusiast, and as such humbly present your S4's big brother.

It's just AT&T in this case but the the way telco's are set up in general. There's always subcontractors or franchisees so you're never dealing with the actual company, but people who don't give a shit about customer service or public image or competency as long as they follow the company policies. Even then little guys like you get lost in the behemoth that is the mess of customer records and data. It's kinda what happens when you only have like 4 different companies you can go with, none of whom give a shit because they're making unfathomable amounts of money off their sketchy and unethical business practices.

I too enjoy purple cars, and the fine representation you've posted.

I've only dealt with Best Buy for the past two or three times I've upgraded my phone. They just seem to be a lot more on the ball, and I've never had an issue. They also have a lot better selection of new cases right there, and let you open the package up and try the case on the phone to see if you will like it, which I've never had happen in a normal phone store.

Cell carriers and cable companies.

Pretty much the worst ever.

They get you with the family plans.

Far better deal for a family is Cricket. It's owned by AT&T.

I finally got around this whole nonsense of contract phones, and bought my 64GB Moto X from Motorola. They made it, shipped it to my house, and I was happy.

Reason I got that? AT&T wouldn't unlock a Nexus 6, even though I've been in good standing for years with them. So I told them to piss off, and I'd buy my phone direct from the manufacturer. Ended up with a Moto X instead of a Nexus 6, but so what.

Oops. Other than the fact it takes a nano-SIM and the Galaxy S3 I had previously had a microSIM.

Down to the AT&T Store. I'm not on contract, so this helps. It also doesn't help that they make you sit around to do something as simple as get a new SIM.

So I brought the phones and myself in, and just asked the simple question.

"Do you have any nano-SIMs? I need a nano-SIM for my new Moto X, and my account is on a MicroSIM."

First thing they asked was if I bought it from AT&T.

"No, I bought it from Motorola. Their spec sheet says it uses the same frequency bands as the AT&T model."

Well, it might not work, I was told, because it wasn't an AT&T phone.

"My understanding is that GSM and UMTS and LTE are worldwide standards. So long as you have the right frequency bands, it will work."

So after hemming and hawing, the AT&T person finally listened to this:

"Look, let's just try it anyway. If it works, great, if not, I'll send it back to Motorola, and get them to send the correct one."

One nano-SIM later, HSPA+ works! But no LTE.

"Can you check and see if it is authorized in your system? I remember we had to do that to get LTE to work on the last phone."

He re-authorized the SIM in the AT&T system, and shock, I had LTE.

Ironically, it's one of the few times I'd set foot into an AT&T store and not had to pay them something.

This kinda shit is why I am on a no contract carrier. I am sure there are no contract solutions that run on AT&T network so you don't even have to changed anything. I'm on virgin mobile which has very slow sprint data but I'm generally on wifi anyways so I don't mind it. At some point it's not even about how much money I save, I'm just glad I never have to deal with any customer service reps or any bullshit. Changing phones is just buy it, change over. Bill is the same every month no matter what.

Now if only cable companies had competitors that offered pay for what you want packages without any bullshit. That would be awesome just like prepaid phone companies.

Easy solution: get a Lumia on Cricket or Straight Talk/Tracfone, Net10, etc, and have a better phone on the same network spending less per month. Or switch to T-Mobile.

As one who used to work for AT&T Customer Service (Retention department), your experience sounds par for the course for iphonie purchasing. It'd be worse if you were trying to do it right when a new model comes out. 95% of my calls were iphonie-related, and for stupid crap, including but not limited to the following: the phones being too expensive (they're admittedly grossly overpriced, but no one gives away the newest model, as these folks expected), customers being ineligible to upgrade (pre-AT&T Next) usually due to history of carrying past-due balances and/or suspensions or having recently gotten a newish model, problems with the crap software/OS, not being able to afford the monthly bill, wanting to switch to another carrier because they could get some deal - usually newer phones -and being upset about the legit early termination fees, and, the most common, broken, bricked, and lost devices. apple also had strict policies with us that were inviolate, basically preventing us from directly resolving the customer's issue if they either had an iphonie or wanted an iphonie, which forced us to try to reason with unhelpful and disinterested apple reps, usually to no avail.
